Blasphemy laws continue to be a problem across Africa, with several African countries imposing severe sentences for blasphemy and defamation of religion and similar offences. This is despite the clear provisions for the free practice of religion (Article 8) and the rights to expression (Article 9) within the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
